Philadelphia Gas Leak - Odor

Due to a high-pressure gas leak on the 1700 block of W. Olney Avenue, neighboring townships are reporting a surge in gas odor complaints, both indoors and outdoors. The leak occurred around 8:15 a.m. Thursday when construction work at West Olney Avenue and 18th Street struck a gas line, releasing a cloud of smoke into the air.

As a precaution, La Salle University, Central High School and a nearby apartment building were evacuated, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department. Emergency crews are currently on-site working to contain the leak, and while no fires or injuries have been reported, the strong gas odor is affecting surrounding areas.

Springfield Township residents do not need to report the gas smell for this incident to Police or the Township. Springfield's Emergency Management team is monitoring the situation as it occurs. All other gas-related incidents can be reported to PECO at 1-800-841-4141.
