In response to feedback regarding traffic congestion on Bethlehem Pike during certain times of day, PennDOT retained a traffic management firm to analyze the corridor spanning from Paper Mill Road in Springfield Township to Valley Green Road in Whitemarsh Township. Over several months, the firm gathered data on traffic volumes, signal timing, detection systems, and other relevant factors.
Using this data, engineers developed a traffic model to identify improvements. Based on the model’s results, updates to signal timing and detection software were recommended to enhance traffic flow along the corridor.
Starting Wednesday, September 3, the traffic management team will begin implementing these updates at each signalized intersection along Bethlehem Pike. Work will start just after the morning rush hour at the northern end of the corridor and progress southward until all intersections have been updated.
Motorists may encounter brief delays during this process and are encouraged to allow extra travel time.
