Leaf Collection Season Reminder & Important Regulations
As the leaf-collection season winds down, Springfield Township would like to remind residents of several important regulations that help keep our community clean, safe, and resilient during fall weather. Leaf collection will conclude in December, with the exact end date to be announced in the coming weeks.
Do Not Place Leaves or Debris in Streets or Waterways
Township Ordinances prohibit placing leaves, grass clippings, tree branches, or other yard debris in any street, storm drain, creek, or waterway. Obstructed water flow increases the likelihood of flooding during rain events. Our Public Works Department spends significant time and resources keeping these areas clear. Residents who observe illegal dumping of any kind are encouraged to notify the Police Department immediately at 215-836-1600.
Leaf Piles Can Create Safety Hazards
Leaf piles left in the roadway can lead to several dangerous situations:
-
Fire risk when vehicles park over combustible materials
-
Traffic hazards due to narrowed travel lanes
-
Increased potential for crashes
Please ensure all leaf waste stays off the street for everyone’s safety.
Proper Leaf-Waste Disposal
Residents may dispose of leaf waste in the following ways:
-
Compost on your property, or
-
Place leaves in biodegradable paper bags for collection on your regular refuse and recycling pickup day.
Bagging, Bundling & Weight Requirements
To ensure efficient and safe collection, please follow these guidelines:
-
All leaf-waste materials must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or bundled and set at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your regular collection day.
-
Bags must not exceed 50 lbs.
-
Tree trimmings and brush must be cut and bundled into four-foot lengths, with nothing larger than six inches in diameter, and weighing no more than 25 lbs.
-
Plastic bags and refuse cans containing leaf waste will not be collected.
-
There is a 15-bag limit per household. The Township will make every reasonable effort to remove additional bags in a timely manner.
Open Burning Prohibited
Open burning of leaves or yard waste is not permitted in Springfield Township.
