Potential Weekend Snowstorm
Springfield Township residents are advised to prepare for a potential winter storm that could impact the area beginning late Saturday, January 24, continuing through Sunday, January 25, 2026.
Forecast models currently show a system moving toward the East Coast from the Southwest, with snow possibly arriving overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning. Snow could be heavy on Sunday and may linger into Monday morning. The exact track and impacts of the storm remain uncertain, including the potential for some mixed precipitation if the system shifts north. Regardless of snowfall totals, temperatures are expected to remain brutally cold throughout the weekend, with highs in the teens to near 20 degrees. Cold conditions are expected to persist into the following week, limiting any melting.
The Township will continue to monitor the storm and provide updates as conditions develop.
Township Winter Weather Procedures & Resident Guidelines
During the winter weather season, Springfield Township reminds residents of the following snow and ice guidelines to help ensure safe and efficient operations. Any Township Administration or Library delays or closures will be posted on the Township website.
Parking Restrictions
During a winter weather advisory or snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from streets and roadways whenever possible. Residents with access to garages, driveways, or other off-street parking are required to use them.
Residents without off-street parking may park on the street only on the EVEN-numbered side of the street, as 2026 is an even-numbered year. Where permanent parking restrictions exist, those restrictions will remain in effect.
Whenever snowfall reaches three inches or more in Springfield Township, or if the City of Philadelphia declares a Highway Snow Emergency, all on-street parking throughout the Township is prohibited.
Residents are encouraged to assist neighbors who lack off-street parking by offering driveway space when possible to help crews clear streets more effectively.
Snow Shoveling Guidelines
-
All sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice by the abutting property owner within 24 hours after snowfall ends (Ordinance Code: Chapter 92-21).
-
It is unlawful to shovel or throw snow into streets or roadways (Ordinance Code: Chapter 92-24). In simpler terms—do not put snow in the street.
-
Residents are also asked to remove any curb-line or on-street basketball nets, as they obstruct snow removal and should never be placed in the roadway.
Full details can be found here:
Snow Removal Operations
Plowing begins once at least two inches of snow have accumulated on roadways. Primary roads and bus routes are cleared first, followed by secondary and tertiary streets. Clearing the entire Township road network typically takes 6–8 hours after snowfall ends.
Please note:
- Public Works cannot plow private driveways.
- If your street has not yet been plowed, residents are asked not to clear the final 3–4 feet of their driveway, as this area will be plowed during the final curb-line pass.
- Please refrain from flagging down snow plow drivers.
For snow-related concerns, residents may contact the Township at 215-836-7600.
Student Snow Shovel Registry – 2026
Residents in need of sidewalk snow removal assistance may utilize the Township’s Student Snow Shovel Registry, which connects residents with local youth offering shoveling services for a fee. All arrangements are made privately between the resident and student.
The 2026 Student Snow Shovel Registry is available online, with printed copies also available at the Township Administration Building.
Adopt a Hydrant – Save a Life
Residents are asked to help keep fire hydrants clear during and after snowstorms. Please shovel a 3-foot path from the street to the hydrant and a 3-foot radius around it to ensure firefighters can access hydrants quickly in an emergency.
Trash & Recycling Collection
Trash and recycling schedules may change during winter storms depending on conditions. Updates will be posted on the Township website as needed.
Leaf and yard waste collection is suspended during January and February. If leaf bags are currently at the curb, please pull them back during storms to prevent freezing.
The Township appreciates residents’ cooperation and patience as crews work to keep roads safe for everyone. Your adherence to these guidelines plays an important role in efficient and effective snow operations.
