Today is America Recycles Day, and what better way to celebrate than to understand how recycling is handled in Springfield Township!

Ways to Recycle in Springfield Township

Residential Recycling Program

Springfield Township continues to operate one of the most successful residential recycling programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The continued cooperation and participation of all Township residents is a giant part of that success and makes our Township refuse department as efficient as some of the largest private collection firms in the country.

Residential recyclable materials are collected on the same day as refuse. Springfield Township now collects all recyclables in a true commingled, or "single-stream" fashion. When recyclables are collected in a single-stream manner, cans, bottles, paper and cardboard are collected together and separated later at an automated recycling facility.

Acceptable Materials

  1. Glass: all colors. (NO ceramics, light bulbs, plate glass, head lights, mirrors, windshields, or glass blocks).
  2. Cans: aluminum beverage cans and bi-metal cans.
  3. Plastics: (#1 through #7) containers including soft drinks, water bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles and food/yogurt.
  4. Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, computer paper, telephone books, corrugated cardboard and paperboard containers including cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and cartons from beer and soda (with no waxy coating) - are recyclable. Please remove contaminants such as trash, food waste, styrofoam, plastic and all other packing materials.

Recyclable materials may be combined in one can or container not to exceed 32-gallon capacity or 50 lbs. in weight. Please do not use plastic bags!

New and replacement recycling containers are available at the Township Building at a cost of $15 per container.

Retrievr - Clothing and Electronic Recycling

Another recycling option available to residents is Retrievr, a convenient on-demand doorstep clothing and electronics recycling service.

In 2019, Springfield Township and your neighbors helped Retrievr recycle 50 tons of electronics, clothing, and accessories. Retrievr, the pickup service for electronics and clothing recycling that serves Montgomery County, has added to the list of materials that it will accept for a fee.  Microwave ovens, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, and mini refrigerators can be picked up for a fee, in addition to TVs and monitors.  The fee schedule is listed below and is on the Retrievr website at http://retrievr.com/montcopa
