Mermaid Park Closed for Restoration
Mermaid Park, located at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Mermaid Lane in Wyndmoor, will be closed from mid-March until Fall 2022 in order for the Township to undertake the Mermaid Park Stream and Habitat Restoration Project. To ensure the safety of the public, residents are advised to avoid the park, as it is an active work zone. All amenities, such as trash cans and mutt mitts, have been taken down.
About the Project
Initiated in 2019, the Township was awarded over $223,000 in county/private grant funds for the Mermaid Park Stream and Habitat Restoration Project. The dredging of Mermaid Pond is the first part of this project and is intended to remove the sediment that has built up over the years and negatively impacted the pond’s ecosystem. The Township and its contractors will be relocating the wildlife in the pond (i.e. fish, turtles, etc.) to another body of water in the Township prior to the dredging work. It is the Township’s intent to follow the dredging with streambank stabilization work and the construction of a new perimeter walking trail in the park.
This work was awarded to Toth Brothers Clearing and Dredging, Inc. by the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners at their March 9, 2022 business meeting.
