Streambank Stabilization at Mermaid Park
Streambank stabilization work at Mermaid Park in Wyndmoor is scheduled to begin next week on Monday, July 25 and continue through the rest of the week.
There will be no on-street parking on East Mermaid Lane in front of Mermaid Park from Friday, July 22 through Friday, July 29, 2022. The stabilization of the streambank at Mermaid Park is part of an ongoing stream and habitat restoration project that will help prevent future erosion and improve the ecological conditions in Mermaid Park.
The Township and its contractors will be using a green/sustainable vegetated walling system in its work to stabilize the streambank. As opposed to traditional techniques, this alternative and green method of streambank stabilization will result in a more natural solution with the vegetation acting as "locks" to prevent future erosion. This work will be followed in August with the construction of a new trail in the park.
To ensure the safety of the public, Mermaid Park will remain closed until the completion of this project in Fall 2022.
About the Project
The Township secured over $223,000 in county/private grant funds for the Mermaid Park Stream and Habitat Restoration Project. Earlier this year, Mermaid Pond was dredged and a substantial amount of sediment from the bottom of the pond was removed. The stabilization of the streambank is the next part of this project and will be followed in August with the construction of a new trail in the park. The contracts for the streambank stabilization and construction of the trail were awarded by the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners at their June 8, 2022 Business Meeting.
