Springfield Township is pleased to announce that the Township has been awarded over $930,000 in grant funding to transform 1725 Walnut Avenue in Oreland, also known as the former Tank Car Site, into a public park.
The 7.8 acre property was acquired by Springfield Township in 2015 for the sole intent of remediating and redeveloping the site into a public park. Since acquiring the site, the Township has worked with consultants to undertake environmental assessments in accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Land Recycling (Voluntary Cleanup) Program. Roughly two years of soil samples and water monitoring are now complete and the Township is ready to take the next steps in the transformation of the former Tank Car Site.
James Lee, President of the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners, commented "this grant funding is a historic investment for our local park system that will allow the Township to redevelop a blighted former industrial site into an additional green/recreational space for our community. Although the exact layout and amenities to be included in the park are to be determined through the development of a master site plan, the Township is excited to have secured this funding and look forward to adding a new park to the Springfield Township park system!"
The Township expects to initiate a master site plan for the former Tank Car property, partially funded by a $25,000 grant awarded to the Township by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, in the near future.
