Springfield Township Shade Tree Commission will be hosting its Annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 25th at the Library from 9am to 11am.

Tree Giveaway

As part of their Arbor Day celebration, the Shade Tree Commission will be hosting its traditional tree giveaway by raffling off thirty-eight (38) trees to eligible Township Households who register in advance. 

Residents interested in entering the raffle for a chance for a free tree MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE starting at 9am on Friday, April 10th. PRE-REGISTRATION to be entered into the raffle will remain open until thirty-eight (38) households are selected and emailed after 4pm on Friday, April 17th. Raffled trees are limited to one per winning household. Households who received a tree as part of the Shade Tree Commission's Tree Giveaway at Arbor Day 2024 and 2025 may not be eligible. First priority will be given to households who have never received a tree. 

A representative of the Shade Tree Commission will reach out via email to confirm tree pickup. If the person selected does not confirm "yes" within 48 hours, the tree may be given away to another household.

Registration for our Tree Giveaway Raffle will be available online or in person at the Springfield Township Administration Building.

2026 Available Trees

Enter our Tree Giveaway Raffle for a chance to win one of these trees below. On the raffle registration form, you may choose your first and second choice/preference. 

      • Black Gum 5 gall. (Nyssa sylvatica) Known for its striking fall colors, glossy leaves, and unique bark texture, this tree is often used as an ornamental tree in landscaping providing shade and visual interest throughout all seasons. The tree even produces small, blue-black fruits that attracts birds and pollinators.

      • White Oak 5 gall. (Quercus alba) Known by its rounded-lobed leaves, small brown acorns, and a wide spreading crown. The wood of the white oak is dense and durable, giving the tree a long lifespan of 350-500 years. This tree provides habitat and food for various wildlife.

      • American Hophornbeam 5 gall. (Ostrya virginianaKnown for its green and brown catkins in the early spring which are followed by clusters of seed-bearing pods. The fruit develops in the summer and is ripe by fall. It is suitable for various landscapes and is an important food source for wildlife.

      • Bald Cypress 5 gall. (Taxodium distichumKnown for its distinctive root structures that protrude above the ground and its longevity of 600 years. The trees needle-like leaves are yellow/green in the summer and rusty orange in the fall. It provides excellent habitat for wildlife and helps control flood waters and soil erosion with its roots.

Arbor Day is a holiday dedicated to the planting and caring of trees. Trees are important to our local ecosystem for a number of reasons, including improving air quality, stormwater management, shading and cooling, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. By giving out free trees, the Shade Tree Commission hopes to inspire the planting and care of trees in the Township.
